Some people develop software as a pet project or for home use or
on a purely academical basis but most companies have to live off
it, unfortunately ;-)
Even if I wasn't interested in running Yate as non-root personally
you will have to be prepared for those kind of questions because
they will be brought up by customers. Dozends of times.
It's kind of unfair because people were (more or less) happy with
their legacy PBXs, and nobody ever asked if the software ran as

For what reason?

Thanks for the pointer. Regrettably I didn't have the time to dig
into the source code of Yate yet so I wont be able to tell if that
patch is architecturally clean an so on.
From a user's perspective I don't want to care about patches.
From a developer's perspective my experience shows that for a patch
there are 2 options: be incorporated into the mainline (i.e. trunk)
or be doomed. Having to maintain a patch which the mainline doesn't
like over an extended period of time is a sisyphean task.
