Summary 0000296: Clarification of GPL exception for the use of GPL incompatible libraries
Description Yate is licensed under the GPL, but uses libraries with GPL-incompatible licenses, namely OpenSSL, OpenH323 and PWlib. The README says there is an exception for linking with proprietary libraries, but there is no further specification of the details of that exception and all source files only mention the GPL. The website says there is an exception for linking with OpenH323/PWlib, but doesn't mention OpenSSL. IANAL, but I think this should really be mentioned in the soruce code and AFAIK the preferred way is to state the exception in the GPL header of every source file.

A quick grep also shows a few GPL copyright notices from other people than Null and of course those authors have to agree with adding an exception or the code should be replaced by code with a permissive license. The list is pretty small however and it shouldn't be that hard to get those things fixed:

regex.c: A more uptodate and LGPL version can be copied from gnulib
YSHA1.cpp: A LGPL version of the SHA1 algorithm can be copied from gnulib or gnutls
speexcodec: We should ask Mikael Magnusson to agree with exception
extmodule and dumbchan: We should ask Maciek Kaminski to agree with exception
alsachan: We should ask Pablo Sampere to agree with exception

I would really like to see yate with all features enabled in Debian, but currently Yate with SSL or H323 enabled isn't distributable, so it would be nice to get this fixed. I'm willing to write the necessary patches, but we have to agree on the solution first.
